One of a deluxe, limited, pre-trade, edition of 350 copies, this being No. 196, signed by Mortimer Menpes on the limitation page. Bound in strong cream cloth with gilt rules, decoration and letterings, bevelled boards, top edge gilt, all others deckled. Tall 4to. Boards a little soiled, rubbed on corners and spine ends, sunned on spine. Internally some minor toning on endpapers and occasional spotting, else clean and tidy. Previous owner's stamp on front paste down, small bookseller's ticket. A magnificent volume, richly illustrated by one of Britain's leading artists of the time, providing a record of the Boer War. Menpes was in South Africa during the war and created a series of paintings depicting leading players - Lord Roberts, Winston Churchill, Cecil Rhodes, Alfred Milner etc. There are also paintings of views of South Africa and battle scenes from the Boer War. A scarce, beautifully illustrated record of important events in British and African history.
