In greenish-blue cloth-covered boards with extensive gilt decoration, lettering and featuring the now famous vignette of the child and dragonfly. All edges gilt. Dark brown endpapers. Boards a worn at edges, rubbed and rounded on corners, fraying around spine and joints. Front hinge cracked, and an A has been penciled on the front free endpaper, some spotting on next leaf and faint, occasional spotting throughout. First published in book form in 1863, this is the first edition of The Water-Babies to feature Sambourne's illustrations.
