The Vanderbilts were once the richest family in the United States, a fortune built on shipping and railroads.  The volume tells of  the violent feud between Cornelis Vanderbilt Jr's (the author) parents and his sister Grace Wilson Vanderbilt following her elopement with Neily Vanderbilt III in the 1890s.
