Gracie was a survivor of the Titanic.  His book on the incident, at times horrific and graphic, was his attempt to make sense of the events but, weakened by his struggles in the icy water and haunted by what he'd seen, he survived only a few months after the sinking and his book was published after this death.  The tells the story of each lifeboat, setting out the facts and recounting dramatic surviror accounts.  The book has been published more recently under the title Titanic: A Survivor's Story.
