First illustrated edition (first thus). Complete in one volume. viii, 320pp, plus colour plate frontispiece and further monochrome plate illustrations, further line drawings and sketches in text. In a later binding: plain green cloth boards with gilt lettering on green spine label. Thick 4to. . Cloth a little rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends. Text block edges toned. First and last few leaves heavily spotted, with fainter and occasional spotting throughout, mild toning around page margins. Title page smudged and marked. A handsome, imposing volume. Frontispiece shows naval flags of the world, with chapters on Men-of-War, Men of Peace, The Men on the Sea, Perils of a Sailor's Life etc. Whymper was topographical explorer (as well as a newspaper man and artist), best known for his documentation of the west coast of North America.
