The Prime Minister's Papers: W E Gladstone, Volume One (Autobiographica) and Volume Two (Autobiographical Memoranda 1832-1845) (Historical Manuscripts Commission)
Two volumes. Bright red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decorations. Neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. Both volumes in their original dust jackets (a little rubbed at edges). Volume One contains the full text of the autobiography which Gladstone wrote in extreme old age, in which he explains the development of his political and religious ideas and frankly admits the mistakes he made in his public life: a revelation of the mind of a statesman who consistently tried to apply the principles of Christianity to the practice of politics.
