16pp stapled booklet, illustrated, in glossy card covers. 8vo. Very gentle edge wear to card covers, else neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. These exquisitely embroidered green velvet hangings - needlework bed hangings held at Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk - are connected with two of the most fascinating figures of the 16th century - Mary, Queens of Scots and Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury (aka Bess of Hardwick). They were worked during Mary's long captivity in England, for most of which she was under the care of Bess's husband, the Earl of Shrewsbury. This little booklet looks at their history, symbolism and workmanship.
