First edition, first impression. xviii, 248pp, with plate frontispiece and six further plate illustrations in text; headpieces, tail pieces, and other occasional page decorations. Quarter bound in blue cloth over deep red cloth, gilt titles on spine. Deckled edges and printed on wove paper (except plates). 8vo. Boards are worn, a little rubbed at edges and rounded on corners and spine ends. Armorial bookplate of Sidney A Beveridge on front paste down, previous owners inscription on front free endpaper and further previous owner's name, Admiral Henry Boys, dated 1894. (Admiral Boys was superintendent of the Royal Navy College at Portsmouth, Director of Naval Ordnance and Second in Command of the Channel Fleet, 1878-79). Faint and occasional spotting on endpapers. Else internally neat and clean, if just a tad loose. A lovely vintage copy of this hard to find history of Walmer and its castle.
