A lovely matching set of the first English translation of Stendhal's great unfinished novel, which appeared posthumously under the title Lucien Leuwen. Begun in 1834, Stendhal realised that its outspoken political criticism made publication impossible while he remained a Government official. He abandoned the work in 1836, three-quarters finished and with the end sketched out.
