Not dated but circa 1860. iv (including additional title page), xii, 64 (plus 32 hand coloured plate illustrations), 4. Brown buckram boards, elaborately decorated with gilded motifs and butterflies, bevelled edges, text block edges gilded all round (boards a little rubbed at edges and points). Tissue guarded frontispiece, additional illustrated title page. Numerous, gloriously fresh and bright hand coloured illustrations of British Butterflies, showing also their caterpillars and the plants on which they feed. 64pp of accompanying text, plus a supplement on the best methods of preserving butterflies and moths. The gutta-percha (adhesive) used to bind the pages has deteriorated, as is common with this title, leaving a few pages loosen or detached, else internally remarkably fresh, clean and tidy.
