Undated (British Library catalogue states 1890). 234pp, 16pp publisher's ads, five black and white plates. Blue cloth-covered boards; four colour illustration on front and spine, gilt titles on front and spine; bevelled edges. 12mo. Sun faded spine, considerable wear. Bumped bottom edges and spine ends, cloth rubbed. Cloth worn through on corners. Covers soiled and stained. Text block edges tanned and starting to fox. Front hinge reinforced with bookbinder's tape. Prelims foxed and starting to tan. Rear free endpaper missing. Gutter stretched midway through. One plate appears to have been re-inserted; edges chipped. Internally neat, clean and bright. Novel set in the Cheddar district in the 1790s which warns of the dangers of superstition, in particular the telling of fortunes.
