First English Edition. Issued by H Henry and Co in 1896, this volume was part of a projected 11 volume first edition of Nietzche's collected works in English but, after publishing A Genealogy of Morals, Thus Spake Zarathustra and The Case of Wagner (which did not sell well) H Henry and & Co were bankrupted and sold the remaining sheets to Fisher Unwin who published a second issue in 1896. Scarce in this edition. xx [4] 354, 6. In black cloth boards with blind embossed decorations and gilt titles front and spine. Top edge trimmed, all other edges deckled. Black endpapers. 8vo. Boards a little worn, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends. Small bookseller's ticked on front paste down, endpapers slightly marked. Previous owner's stamp, faint and discreet on front free endpaper verso; previous owner's initials, dated 1896, on half title. Some faint and occasional spotting on prelims and some mild toning in page margins. Gutter cracked between endpapers and half title. Issued under the editorship of Alexander Tille, based on the final German edition prepared by Dr Fritz Koegel.
