Issued as part of Hutchinson's 3 shilling series all of which were "crown 8vo, handsome cloth gilt, with illustrations on art paper", according the publisher's contemporary catalogue. Plate illustration to frontis. Bound in bright red cloth with elaborate, classically- influenced decoration to front board and spine and gilt panel on spine. Boards very slightly rubbed at edges and rounded on corners. Some spotting to text block edges and minor marks on rear board. Endpapers tanned; ffep has previous owner's name inscribed, else internally bright and clean. Neat, square and tight volume. Stepping Heavenward which, as the title suggests, has a religious theme, was the most popular of Elizabeth Prentiss's novels, originally published in parts in the magazine, Chicago Advance, in 1869. 0
