xii, 264, lx, tissue-guarded frontispiece plus seven further black and white plate illustrations and two coloured fold-out plans, one showing Shrewsbury School in 1898, in its current location above the Quarry and the River Severn and other showing the School layout in its former location on Castle Gates, opposite Shrewsbury Castle, in what is now Shrewsbury Library. In blue cloth covered boards with gilt titles (cloth significantly rubbed on edges and around spine, worn all over; there is an old label on the front identifying this volume as once belonging the Times' Library). Jet black endpapers. Internally its generally neat and clean, the binding is a little fragile, with the gutter strained in places, the tissue-guard is toned, and one of the plans has a short tear (not affecting image) running from the gutter. There are some apparently contemporary annotations in a copperplate hand which appear to be corrections to the text. Provides details of all the boys entering Shrewsbury School between 1798 and 1898, together with various charts and lists of sporting teams and rowers etc. Fascinating and surprising short section on the Royal Shrewsbury School Hunt which appears to have met regularly from the early 1840s onwards. Fascinating volume, which records, among other things, Charles Darwin's entry to the School in 1818.
