Report on the Manuscripts of F W Leybourne-Popham of Littlecote, Co Wilts (Historical Manuscripts Commission)
xxxii, 344pp. In a later binding of red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. 8vo. Cloth a little worn all over, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends. Call number label taped over a sunned spine. Lending library markings on endpapers and title page, occasional discreet ownership stamps. Pages a little age dulled, else neat, clean and tight throughout. The Littlecote collection includes two distinct series of papers: The Popham Papers consist largely of the correspondence of Colonel Edward Popham (born circa 1610), one of the three Generals at Sea for the Commonwealth; and the Clarke Papers, which may have been retained by the family in order to prepare a history of the restoration period. With an extensive analysis of the papers by way of introduction, they form an important insight into the Interregnum and the Restoration.
