George Awoonor Williams, who also wrote as Kofi Nyisevu Awooner, said of himself 'born 1935 in Keta (Ghana) - the flood town, with the sea in my ears'. He was a Ghanain poet, author and diplomat whose work recognised the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people while commenting on the situation of Africa during the period of decolonisation. Awooner lost his life in the September 2013 attack on the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya. This was his first collection of poetry to be published.
