Not dated but circa 1880 (first issued in 1878). [vi] pp145-184, plus 8 tissue-guarded, gilt surrounded, engravings. Strong card boards, richly illuminated, quarter bound in red cloth over paper (boards a little worn and soiled, rubbed and chipped at corners). Internally neat, clean, bright and tight barring a little toning on endpapers and occasional, faint spotting. A stunning volume covering portraiture and history of the period of Charles II and the Gun Powder Plot and the English Civil War. Blackie originally issued its Pictures and Royal Portraits in 1878 in two volumes. For this re-issue, each volume was issued in four divisions (making eight volumes in the series in all). Each division was sold separately for 8s. Stunning engravings showing Charles I (for a portrait by Van Dyke), The Departure of the Pilgrim Fathers, the Opening Scenes of the Civil War, Cromwell at the Battle of Marston Moor etc.
