First edition, first impression. 190pp, with occasional line drawings in text. Burnt umber cloth-covered boards with black lettering on the spine. Illustrated endpapers. 8vo. Cloth is a little worn, with significant uneven mottled fading, gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends. Hint of spotting on endpapers, gift inscription dated 1951 on first true leaf, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Some mustiness on first opening. Dust wrapper worn and marked, rubbed all round edges, especially on corners and spine tips, with occasional short nicks. Dust wrapper now protected in an archival-quality Mylar wrapper, fitted without the use of tape or adhesives.
An unusual story by the author of Biddy Christmas: eleven-year-old Bridgit Maitland lives in a Midland town where her parents keep a bookshop in a beautiful but shabby Georgian townhouse, but the bookshop is failing and the family's difficulties threaten to upset Bridgit's plans to become an artist. Very hard to find, especially in dust wrapper.
