After the French defeat by the Germans in the second world war, Marshall Pétain led an authoritarian Vichy government that collaborated with Nazi Germany. Although Petain dismissed Laval in 1940, he was later reinstated, and under Laval's influence, the collaboration with the Nazis became more active and wide-ranging.  This collaboration was seen as treason by some and led to trials and executions for both men after the war.
