206pp. Red cloth-covered boards (a little worn at edges, rounded at corners and spine tips). Ex library, with lending marks on front endpaper. In its original dust wrapper, showing French peasants in a straw woven heart (a little rubbed and chipped on edges, a couple of short nicks, shelf wear). Charming line drawings by E H Shepard in text. The Book Club was one of several book clubs founded by the famous London bookseller, Foyles, in the 1940s and 1950s, selecting quality contemporary fiction to share with its readers. Volumes were typically issued very soon after their trade publication and with dust jackets and artwork near identical, the name of the book club replacing that of the publisher.
