First English Edition (translated from the original Spanish). Full title: Pablo de Segovia - The Spanish Sharper, Translated from the Original of Francisco de Quevedo-Villegas, Illustrated with One Hundred and Ten Drawings by Daniel Vierge, together with Comments on them by Joseph Pennell and an Essay on the Life and Writings of Quevedo by Henry Edward Watts. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, title page and accents in red and black. xlii, 240pp. Vellum boards, seven raised bands, eight panels on spine with leather title labels, all edges coloured. Folio. Boards soiled and rubbed at edges, rounded on corners, scuffing on spine. Profusely illustrated (endpapers a little tanned, strained at gutter, tissue guard browned, else internally neat, clean and fresh. The only novel written by Quevedo (1580-1645), it chronicles the adventures of Don Pablos, a buskin or swindler. Pablos sets out in life with two aims: to learn virtue and to become a caballero (gentleman). He fails miserably in both.
