xvi, 492pp, with portrait frontispiece and occasional black and white illustrations. A facsimile reprint of the original 1891 publication. Bound in full brown leather with blind embossed decorations and gilt lettering front and spine. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Yellow satin ribbon marker bound in. 8vo. Boards very slightly rounded on corners. Original leaflet from the publisher, giving details of John Bourke and his writing, Crook and the Indian Wars loosely laid in, together with an original, unused 'classics of the old west' ex libris bookplate. Most remember only one military leader from the Indian Wars, George Armstrong Custer, who gained lasting fame by losing his entire command and his own life through an excess of zeal. Here is the story of a very different hero on the Indian Wars. In some ways General George Crook was the hero of those wars. He defeated the Sioux and the Apache and their legendary chieftains Geronimo and Crazy Horse. A beautiful book
