First editon.  xvi, 320pp, with black and white plate illustrations.  Decorated black cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on front panel and spine.  8vo.  Cloth a little worn, gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends.  Text block edges a little darkened.  Previous owner's bookplate on front paste down.  Hint of toning in page margins else neat, clean and tight. 

Cornelia Phillips Spencer (1825 – 1908) was a writer and social historian, pivitol in the closure of University of North Carolina to protect it from Reconstruction politics and, after a five-year shutdown, heralding the campaign for its reopening.
