Memories of the Months, Series 1 to 5 (Five Volumes)
A complete set at the time of publication, Sir Arthur Maxwell wrote two more series before his death in 1937. Circa 200pp per volume. Uniformly bound in green buckram with gilt titles front and spine. Top text block edge trimmed, all other edges deckled. Tissue-guarded sepia plate frontispieces and occasional further tissue-guarded sepia plates. Title pages printed in red and black. 8vos. Cloth is rubbed at edges and joints, rounded at corners and spine ends. Text block edges toned. Series two to five have a gift inscription on the front free endpaper, on the same hand, dated 1904 to 1907. The first series has two inscriptions inked on front free endpaper, one dated 1902, the other 1951. It also has a pressed dried flower pinned though the half title page (which has left impression and stain on opposite page). Fourth series has some mottling on cloth consistent with old damp damage. Mild toning on endpapers. A handsome if worn set of the memoirs of Sir Herbert Maxwell, the celebrated Scottish novelist, antiquarian, salmon angler and Member of Parliament for Wigtownshire from 1880-1906.
