First edition, first printing. The first edition, which was privately published by Rev Buchanan, includes some illustrations which did not appear in later editions of the work. iv, 78pp, with frontispiece, numerous black and white illustrations, some full page and others in text. In full soft, black Morocco leather with gilt titles on front panel, all edges gilt. Black endpapers. 8vo. Leather is a little worn, rubbed at corners, and at the ends of a sunned spine, with some loss at head of spine. Hinges cracked. Some pencil notes about the edition on the verso of the front free endpaper and previous owner's name neatly written, dated 1888, on the next page. A few small pencil notes in text, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Hard to find title, scarce in this edition. A history of Herne, Kent and reflections on its context and life of the villagers.
