Not dated but likely c 1910. Quarter cloth portfolio with three cloth ties, containing 2pp title and contents listing, wrapped over 40 loose-leaf plates (some colour, some monochrome) depicting a selection of alphabets and numerals from the mediaeval era, including that taken from St Cuthbert's Gospel (the Durham Book) of c 700; from the Monument of Henry II in Westminster Abbey; from the Monument of Richard II, also in Westminster Abbey, c 1400; from Cramner's Bible, etec. Boards and cloth ties worn and lightly spoiled, rubbed at edges; title page browned, and some mild browning in margins of plates, not affecting lettering. Ex library volume with label inside front board and call number on title label. Quaritch issued a similar portfolio at the same time, containing only 26 plates. There is some overlap in the alphabets containing in the two different issues.
