xxx, 250pp [10]. Tipped in colour frontispiece and occasional further illustrations and maps in text. In brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles. 8vo. Cloth very gently rounded at spine ends. Text block edges a little toned. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original, illustrated, dust jacket, lightly bumped on edges with a mildly sunned spine. This volume gives a full account of the journeys of the Swedish naturalist Johan August Wahlberg in the years between 1838 and 1856 in pursuit of scientific specimens in the interior of southern Africa, particularly Natal, Zululand, the Transvaal, Namibia and Botswana. English translations of his original journals and letters are accompanied by analysis and commentary, providing a Swedish perspective on a history more usually told from an English, French or German perspective.
