Previous owner's name on front endpaper. Published in this edition after newspaper serialisation in 21 weekly parts, under the title 'Jessie Melville, Or the Double Sacrifice'. Considered to be one of Pae's 'Edinburgh Novels'. Pae was a popular Scottish author in the mid-19th century, many of his sensational stories being serialised in newspapers and journals prior to publication in book form.
