A thank you card, in envelope, sent by Jacqueline Kennedy to thank the recipient for their condolences following the assassination of husband, President John F Kennedy in November 1963. The envelope, in which the card fits neatly, measures circa 5.75 inches by 3.5 inches. It features Jaqueline Kennedy's printed signature in the top right corner (franking the envelope in place of a stamp), has black trim borders, with Mrs John F Kennedy printed on the back. The envelope is addressed to Miss Ruth Hefner, C/O Miss Marie Costigan, 1000 Powell Street, San Francisco, California. The thank you card has a black border and a printed motif top centre. It reads 'Mrs Kennedy us deeply appreciative of your sympathy and grateful for your thoughtfulness. The envelope appears to have been postally used. It is a little rubbed at corners, lightly indented and slightly soiled. The card is pristine bright white with just a hint of edge wear. President John F Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. In the following weeks and months, Jackie Kennedy received hundreds of thousands of messages of condolence. The following spring, Mrs Kennedy mailed out some 900,000 thank you cards, acknowledging the messages of condolence. This is one of those, preserved in its original envelope.
