First edition, first printing. [iv] 198pp, with numerous illustrative figures and drawings throughout. In decorated green cloth boards with gilt titles (cloth rubbed at edges, markedly so at spine tips and corners, marked and mildly soiled, spine a little sunned, slightly bowed). A few small, mild marks on endpapers, mild strain on front endpaper gutter, rear free endpaper creased over one corner, a little mild spotting to prelims, else internally neat, clean and bright. This interesting work of infant paper craft work was written by Louisa Walker, a remarkable teacher who was an early convert to the teachings of Fredrich Froebel, founder of the Kindergarten movement. Mrs Walker was head of the Infant Department at Fleet Road Board School in Hampstead, London at the end of the 19th century. Following the child-centred teachings of Froebel, she produced several books based on the importance of play and self-activity to early childhood education. This book of paper craft, published in 1901, with its attractive Art Nouveau binding, is an interesting illustration of a fundamental development in child education, as well as a practical and hands on guide to paper craft for young children. 4to.
