Smyth (1858-1944) was a composer - the first female composer to be recognised with a damehood - and suffragette who composed the anthem of the Women's Social and Political Union, 'The March of Women'. Later in life she enjoyed a brief and passionate friendship with Virgina Woolf. This is her compelling and grief-ridden reflection on her beloved dogs, written with warmth. Hard to find title.
