Laing was one of the first missionaries from the Glasgow Missionary Society to arrive on the eastern frontier of South Africa in 1831; like others, he kept a daily journal until his death in 1872. This volume contains the first six years of his journals and covers a tumultuous period on the Eastern Cape, revealing his observations and close relations with the amaXhosa people of the region.
