History of England (Divisions VII, VIII, IX)
Three volumes (divisions) from a series of at least X. Undated but likely c. 1880. Each volume contains a series of fine, tissue-guarded engraved plates featuring characters and scenes from English history, followed by a coloured map and a textual account. Division VII continues with the reign of George II, divisions VIII and IX continue with George II and go onto George III. Uniformly bound in strong buckram with gilt motif and lettering, blind embossed decorations. All edges gilt. 4to. Covers worn and a little soiled and faded, lightly rubbed and rounded at corners, a little more heavily at spine ends; sunned spines, especially division VII. The occasional cracked gutter, but no loosening. A little spotting and toning, mostly affecting tissue-guards, with the occasional page crease and smudge mark. Uncommon (although Virtue also published similar series in much the same vein, some of which are more easily sourced).
