Masefield toured the United States after his return from the war, obstensibly to lecture on English literature, but he also wanted to gather information on American's views on the war in Europe. Upon his return to England, he proposed to the Foreign Office that he write a book to counter German propoganda in the United States. This book is the product of that endeavour.
