2 matching volumes, without jackets, from Macmillan's Illustrated Pocket Classics series, both from 1950 and both featuring 40 illustrations by Hugh Thompson. Red cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. Both volumes have a prize bookplate on the front free endpaper indicating that the volumes were presented to one Hilary Burch as a form prize and reward for steady progress by the headmistress, Catharine M Ramsden, of the County Grammar School for Girls in Bexhill-on-Sea in 1955. Title pages and frontispieces have red lined borders. For both volumes, the boards are lightly worn, and gently rubbed at corners, with the spines just a little faded. Internally both are neat, clean, bright and tight. Lovely vintage copies of these classic novels, accompanied by illustrations from one of the leading illustrators of the late 19th century. Both volumes have an introduction to the work by [Henry] Austin Dobson.
