Text in German. First edition. viii, 474pp, with two spectral charts in photogravure and 74 further illustrations in text. Half bound in tan leather over marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt lettering and decoration on spine with five raised bands. Top edge gilt, other edges deckled. Marbled endpapers. Large 8vo. Boards rubbed at edges and around spine, a few mild marks. Front hinge partially cracked. Previous owner's name neatly inked on first true leaf. A hint of page toning. With a foreword by Prof. H C Vogel. Scheiner, together with Vogel, were two of the pioneers of Astronomical Photographic Spectroscopy, making a significant contribution to the emergence of the then new science of astrophysics. Scheiner (1858-1913) in particular 'proved conclusively through photographic spectroscopy that the Great Andromeda Nebula was...an 'island universe' made of stars.
