A collection of 36 of plays in Dicks' Standard plays series. These were issued as individual plays between 1874 and 1907, each with a engraved illustration on the front. Here 36 of those issues have been bound together in three volumes (the volumes are undated but the style of binding and decoration suggests around 1910). As each was issued individually, and have only been collected together latterly, the condition varies between plays but all are very good. A couple have tanned pages and there is the occasional note or annotation (usually relating to the production of the play in question). Dusty top edges. Some of these plays are now very hard to find. Red cloth boards with black lettering and decoration (a little worn at edges, rounded at corners). Some spotting or tanning to endpapers. Else neat and clean volumes of significant interest in theatre and performance arts history. Plays included are: The Vicar of Wakefield, An Original Drama by Tom Taylor (No. 1037 in Dicks' Standard Plays series); Sam Weller, Or the Pickwickians - A Farcical Comedy, arranged from Charles Dickens' work by W T Moncrieff (No.541); She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith; Gilderoy by W H Murray (No. 371); Jessie Brown, Or the Relief of Lucknow by Dion Boucicault (No. 473); Bonnie Prince Charlie or the Gathering of the Clans by W T Moncrieff (No.900); St Clair of the Isles, Or the Outlaw of Barra, a Scottish Historical Drama (No.794); The Lily of St Leonards, A Melodramatic Romance by Thomas Dibdin; Cramond Brig, Or the Gudeman of Ballangeich, A Comic Drama (No.571); Wallace the Hero of Scotland, A Romantic Historical Drama by William Barrymore (No 953); The Green Bushes of A Hundred Years Ago by John Baldwin Buckstone (No. 327); The Shaughraun, Illustrative of Irish Life and Character by Dion Boucicault (No. 390); Leah the Forsaken by Augustus Daly (No 859); The Lady of the Lake A Romantic Drama by Thomas Dibdin (No 587); Richelieu, Or The Conspiracy by Lord Lytton (No.317); King Henry IV, First part; King Henry IV, Second part; Eugene Aram, Or St Robert's Cave by William T Moncrieff (No. 312); The Daughter of the Regiment by Edward Fitzball (No. 761); Guy Mannering, Or the Gipsy's Prophecy by Daniel Terry; Ivanhoe, dramatised from Sir Walter Scott's novel by Fox Cooper (No. 385); Woodstock, Or The Cavalier, by Isaac Pocock, from the novel by Sir Walter Scott (No. 533); The Jewess, Or The Council of Constanc, by W T Moncrieff (No. 416); Faust, Or the Demon of the Drachenfels, by H P Grattan (No. 573); The Flowers of the Forest, A Gipsy Story by John Baldwin Buckstone (No. 1002); Hard Times by Fox Cooper, founded on the work of Charles Dickens (No.785); The Black-Ey'd Susan of All in the Downs by Douglas Jerrold; East Lynne (No. 331); Speed the Plough, A Comedy by Thomas Morton; Tom Bowling, A Nautical Drama by A L V Campbell (No. 732); Turpins Ride to York, Or Bonny Black Bess, An Equestrian Drama by H M Milner (No. 632); Kenilworth by Thomas Dibdin; Tam O'Shanter by Herny R Addison (No. 532); Ten Thousand a Year by Richard Brinsley Peake (No. 445); The Lass That Loves a Sailor by John Thomas Haines (No. 925); and Mary, Queen of Scots, Or The Escape from Loch Leven by William Murray (No. 408).
