Cloth is faded and rounded at corners and spine tips, a little faded over spine. A little spotted on endpapers and prelims. A few pencil annotations on front endpaper. In its original dust jacket, bumped and rubbed at edges, scuffed at end of a lightly faded spine. Orderly, colonial life fell apart with the Japanese invasion of the supposedly impregnable Philippines in 1941. Morris's account of one of the most appalling siege-battles of the Second World War is based on research and interviews with many of the survivors.
