86pp, plus 24 monochrome plate illustrations, with a few further illustrations in text.  Quarter bound in dark blue cloth over paler blue cloth.  gilt titles on spine.  8vo.  Very slightly rubbed at corners and spine ends.  Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original illustrated dust wrapper, price clipped, gently rubbed at edges and perhaps a tad faded.

Retford was a craftsman. In1892 he joined the famous bow-making firm of William E Hill and Sons and worked at their workshops in Hanwell, making and repairing bows. This monograph distills his experience and knowledge of bows, bow-making, violins and larger members of the violin family of musical instruments.
