Volume I (of eight) only. New edition. [circa 1784] In a much later, somewhat utilitarian, binding. [iv] iv, 160pp, x, 64pp, plus 51 illustrations on plates, mostly engraved. Quarter bound in leatherette over strong blue cloth-covered boards, gilt lettering on spine. Top edge gilt, all other edges speckled. 4to. . A little rubbed at corners, a few mild marks, small area of embossing rubbed over at base of front board. Internally neat, clean and tidy barring occasional spotting. Grose's Antiquities of England and Wales is a compendium of historical monuments, considered one of the most important antiquarian publications of the 18th century. It was originally released in just over one hundred parts from 1772 to 1787 and republished several times. This volume includes Grose's extensive preface, and addendum to preface and covers Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cornwall, and Cumberland, with maps of each county.
