In green textured cloth, decorated black and blind stamp work, gilt titles on spine (boards are worn, rubbed on edges and joints, rounded and lightly frayed at corners and spine ends). Prize presentation plate on front paste down, indicating that the volume was once presented to Ethel Webster for Punctual Attendance at Darnell Road Evening School [Sheffield] in 1899. Gutters cracked between browning endpapers, marginal page toning, a couple of signatures working loose. Annie S Swann was a Scottish journalist, novelist and story writer who wrote mainly under her maiden name but also as David Lyall and Mrs Burnett Smith. A popular writer of romantic fiction, she published over 200 novels, serials and short stories between 1878 and her death in 1943. One of the most commercially successful writers of the early 10th century, she as also a suffragist and liberal activist and a founder member and vice-president of the Scottish National Party.
