A Selection from the New Version of the Psalms for the Use of Churches of Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey
122pp. Marbled endpapers. Bound in full black leather with gilt decorations and lettering (boards are worn, rubbed at edges, chipped at spine ends). Internally neat, clean and bright, with some faint spotting on prelims only. The final page is oversized - it appears to be a printing fault - and the edges have been neatly folded in, in an unusual manner. Firmly bound. Various editions of 'selections from the new versions of the psalms [of David] were published in the early to mid 19th century, often selected for use in specific parishes or groups of churches. This edition includes a generous selection of psalms and verses from psalms designed and published for use at St Mary, Newington (on Kennington Park Road, just near Kennington Tube Station). Although once popular, such psalms books would have been distributed to parishioners (this one was sold by the parish Sextons from the vestry room) and likely heavily used, and are now very hard to find.
