1st UK edition, first printing. xii, 302pp plus 6pp illustrated publisher's catalogue at rear, with a colour plate frontispiece, tissue-guarded, and seven further colour plate illustrations, all by Harold Piffard and an introduction by the Frances Hodgson Burnett on how she came to write the story. In green cloth-covered boards with gilt decorations and lettering, and colour illustration tipped on, bevelled edges, decorated endpapers (boards are worn and rubbed at edges and heavily rubbed with some cracking on spine joints and corners, slightly frayed at spine ends). Hinges cracked, endpapers a little bubbled and discoloured, crease over corner of frontispiece (not affecting image), binding softened but holding, some occasional spotting throughout. The first UK edition of Hodgson's classic children's story of Sara Crew, a story which appears to have been inspired by Charlotte Bronte's unfinished novel, Emma.
