Timperley was a local historian and writer of topographical studies. This is probably the most remarkable of his works for the illustrations which the publisher, Cape, commissioned from leading artist, L S Lowry. This is the only book Lowry illustrated (although he did do a few dust jackets). Now a very hard to find title.
