Sixth edition. vi, 166pp plus 2 pages of advertisements at rear. Four hand-coloured engraved plates including frontispiece and several further wood engraved illustrations in text, by John Leech. Half-title printed in blue, title page printed in red and blue. Chalk-glazed yellow endpapers, all edges gilt, original cinnamon-coloured cloth boards, blind stamped with gilt lettering and decorations on front and spine. See Smith II, 4. Boards significantly rubbed and lightly soiled, corners rubbed and rounded, frayed at spine base and minor loss at spine head. Previous owner's name on front and rear endpapers, which are patchily stained. Front endpaper partially detached and first signature loosen. Small portion of top outer corner missing (not affecting text). Second plate detached but present, chapped at edges. Slightly shaken. Some foxing and spot marks throughout. A very scarce, early edition of Dickens' most famous work.
