William Hastings was a key figure in the Wars of the Roses.  A loyal supported of Edward IV, serving as his Lord Chamberlain, Richard III feared Hastings' influence when he came to power in 1483.  Hastings was accused of treason and executed in June 1483, his death marking a shift in Richard III's kingship towards more autocratic rule and highlighting the political turmoil of the times.
