Johannes Baptista Rietstap (1828-24) was a Dutch heraldist best remembered for his Armorial General, a monumental work containing the blazons and coats of arms of over 100,000 European families. First published in 1861, it remains a standard work on the topic. In the early part of the 20th century the brothers Victor and Henri Rolland undertook to illustrated the Armorial General , designing the majority of heraldic descriptions cited by Rietstap. The volume offered here contains the first two volumes of their illustrations, covering the coats of arms of those families whose names begin with A to F.
