English author Williamson wrote this story in the early 1920s, while living in Florida, crafting much of its in the heat of a blistering sun beside the swamps and marshes. But he failed to find a publisher in the States, with rejections saying it was 'too far back in the time', there being no longer an interest in the post-war years, and 'too English' for an American audience. It was not published until 1945 by Faber & Faber.
