Originally published in 1953 with the sub-title A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure, by the First Men to Swim at Record Depths with the Freedom of Fish, Silent World recounts Cousteau's earliest days of scuba diving, using an aqua lung which allowed for the first time untethered, deep water diving; later chapters concern diving to shipwrecks. The book was the basis for the 1956 academy award winning documentary film of the same name.
