Undated but circa 1865. xxiv, 506pp, tissue-guarded frontispiece and further black and white plate illustrations interleaved in text. Half bound in red leather over red pebbled cloth-covered boards with gilt decorations and gilt titles on a spine with five raised bands. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Red page borders throughout. 12mo. Leather a little rubbed on corners and around spine, lightly worn. Upper text block edge dulled. Previous owner's bookplate on front paste down (George Alexander Touche - likely the British accountant and politician who founded one of the companies that was to be amalgamated to create Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and elected to Parliament for North Islington in 1910). Small scar on front free endpaper else internally neat, clean and tight.
A very nice vintage copy, with a pleasing and tactile patina.
